Nihombashi Mitsukoshi at KOGEI Art Fair Kanazawa
Welcome to the inaugural KOGEI Art Fair Kanazawa, the first dedicated KOGEI Art Fair to be held in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, a city well known on the global stage for its long tradition of the Japanese kogei artisanal crafts that continue to be celebrated since antiquity both on Japanese shores and far beyond. This important exhibition gathers together twenty-nine galleries from domestic and international curators for an eclectic mix of some 150 artists, some well-established, some rising stars, but all for a celebration of this vibrant field of the arts. Whether looking to expand one's collection or for an encounter with the world of kogei for the first time, this is a gathering of talents not to be missed.
Nihombashi Mitsukoshi's own contribution to the festivities draws on our 110 years of expertise since the Mitsukoshi Fine Arts section was first founded as Japan's first art gallery in 1907. Echoing this pioneering spirit for our contribution we have selected five artists that represent the diversity of contemporary kogei, Yukiya Izumita, Kohei Nakamura, Kayoko Mizumoto, Takashi Wakayama, and Akira Wada.
Izumita is known for his remarkable layers of moulded clay that take on rough forms, while fellow potter Wada opts for clean white porcelain deftly sculpted by knife. Meanwhile Nakamura creates traditional Japanese cha-wan tea bowls with contemporary sensibilities, while Mizumoto's work recalls the imagery of Japanese popular culture in classical Kutani-ware. Finally Wakamiya ushers in a new era of Maki-e, a form of urushi lacquerware where the design is drawn in liquid urushi and furnished with metal filings.
We look forward to sharing the work of these remarkable artists with you in person.
